East of Scotland Qualifying Cup, Second Round
Preston Athletic 1 – 3 Gretna 2008
Preston Athletic were unable to extend their excellent unbeaten run as Gretna progressed into the next round of the EOS Qualifying Cup after a convincing win at the Pennypit.
The opening period saw both sides create chances, the visitors were unlucky as a scramble in the box was eventually cleared, then an Andy Gilchrist run and cross was met by Josh McGonigal who’s effort was blocked.
Gretna went ahead on 32 minutes as ‘keeper Chris Flockhart was deceived by a through ball, allowing Gretna’s Iain Anderson to round the keeper and slot home. The visitors then doubled their advantage 5 minutes later as a sublime curled effort by Dean Smith hit the base of the post and spun over the line.
Preston tried to get back in the game in the second period and forced a number of corners, yet Gretna could have extended their lead as Scott Milligan was played clean through and Flockhart did well to block twice.
The home side then got back into the game as sub Gary Nicholson’s shot was partly cleared but the ball struck a Gretna hand on the way and Jamie Beaton converted the resultant spot kick to take his tally to 2 goals in 2 games.
However Gretna then sealed their win a few minutes later as Iain Anderson scored his second despite being clearly offside.
Preston still had an opportunity to come back into the game as a good run and cross by David Porcher was met by Gilchrist but his shot was brilliantly saved by Gretna keeper, Vincent Parker.
Preston now need to dust themselves down and go again as they face BSC Glasgow on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
