Dalbeattie Star 1 Preston Athletic 2
Preston ran out at Islecroft wearing black armbands in memory of Jimmy Watters a long serving member of the club’s committee who passed away last week. The team then put in a performance he would have been proud of.
After an even first 20 minutes, the game came alive as Dalbeattie’s Lee Wells flew into an off the ground challenge and the referee had no hesitation in showing a straight red card. Within minutes Preston took the lead as Josh McGonigal latched onto a slack pass back, rounded the ‘keeper and a defender before his shot eventually crossed the line despite a last gasp attempted block. The lead however only lasted 4 minutes as Lewis Sloan curled in a lovely free kick from 25 yards to level the scoreline.
Before the end of the first half, Sloan again fired in another free kick that Tommy Muir headed just wide, then Preston nearly snatched the initiative as Andrew Gilchrist’s deflected effort hit the top of the crossbar.
The pace in the second half seemed to slow as the sun beat down but Preston tried to take advantage of the extra man and take the initiative as Dalbeattie seemed to be content to hold onto the point. Juan Belope (jordi) drew a foul right on the edge of the box and then had a very good penalty shout as he was bundled over by a clumsy challenge from Richard Maxwell but somehow the referee booked the striker for a dive. With 5 minutes left Gary Nicholson played a neat one-two and broke clear but keeper Darren Martin blocked the shot. In the last minute James Martin threaded a neat pass into the path of Jordi who neatly flicked the ball across Martin off the post and into the net to seal a deserved three points.
