Gretna 2008 3 – 2 Preston Athletic
Ferrari Packaging Lowland League
Report by John Snedden
Preston Athletic started this game on the front foot and deservedly took the lead on 12 minutes as Josh McGonigal tapped in from close range after a neat run and cross from James Martin. David Porcher nearly doubled the lead with a shot that flashed across goal.
Brandon Longcake got the home side back on terms collecting a long through ball and lobbed the advancing John Gilbertson.
McGonigal broke clear on the half hour but was denied by a point blank save from Vincent Parker, the ball broke out wide and crossed into the area for Gary Nicholson who headed just wide.
On 37 minutes Iain Anderson put Gretna ahead latching onto a defence -splitting pass to slot home. After the break the home side spurned a number of opportunities but Anderson then got his second on 75 minutes as the Preston defence was exposed by a swift counter and the striker shot across Gilbertson into the net.
Preston’s debutant Aaran Currie nearly reduced the deficit when sent clean in on goal, but was denied by a great save from Vincent Parker who managed to deflect the curling effort just wide. Then on 90 minutes Ryan McSherry unleashed a thunderbolt from fully 35 yards that flew into the top corner. This tremendous strike spurred the away side on and they nearly salvaged a point as a David Porcher shot was just tipped round the post by the impressive Parker.
