Preston Athletic 0 – 2 Gretna 2008

Despite taking over in December this was manager Craig Nisbet’s first home match in charge of the Panners but the weather ravaged Pennypit pitch did not lend itself to good football, but to their credit both sides tried to bring the ball down and play on the deck. Both sides created numerous chances in the first period the best falling to Preston’s David Scott and David Porcher without really troubling the keeper and Gretna’s Iain Anderson was twice denied by Craig Pennycuick. A very even half ended all square.
The turning point of the game came a minute into the 2nd period when Preston’s Nick Perry broke clear in the box and was clearly pulled back by Connor Casey in the act of shooting, somehow only a free kick and a yellow card were shown and Gretna took full advantage on the hour when Daniel Wadge drove home after a couple of rebounds. Preston were almost level seconds later as a Gary Nicholson cross found Perry whose downward header bounced over Parker the Gretna keeper but also agonisingly over the bar, the away side doubled the advantage a few minutes later as Iain Anderson scored as a long floated free kick wasn’t cleared by the home defence.
