Match Report – Preston Athletic v Threave Rovers

Preston Athletic 5 – 0 Threave Rovers
Ferrari Packaging Lowland League

Preston all but secured their survival in the Lowland League with this victory over bottom side Threave Rovers, but if truth be told the scoreline flatters the home side as Threave contributed much to the game but just could not find the break-through goal.

The home side dominated the early period of the game as they created a number of opportunities, Kenny Park shot over from distance then David Porcher’s shot was well held by keeper Connor Barnes. The crucial break through came in 15 minutes as Porcher’s through ball released Connor Brydon who found the gap at the near post to slot home and relieve the tension around the Pennypit.

Steven Collins had the away sides best chance of the half but shot over from the angle. Kenny Park had another shot from distance from a cleared corner but the effort was deflected wide. Late in the half Preston had a shout for a penalty as Jordi Belope appeared to be fouled in the area but the ball broke to Porcher whose effort was well saved by Barnes.

Threave came out fired up in the second period as Preston appeared to drop off the pace a little. Threave were starting to win the loose balls and as a result created a number of good opportunities, Trialist Steven Collins shot wide under pressure from Jamie Todd, then forced a good save from Chris Flockhart. Preston’s first real attack of the second half came as sub Jordan Bruce broke clear on 66 minutes but great defending by Scott Wilby blocked the effort. Collins again forced another stop from Flockhart after a neat move down the right wing. Preston needed a second goal as Threave looked dangerous and that nearly came when Connor Brydon twice broke clear but shot wide on both occasions.

The second did arrive on 77 minutes as David Scott fed sub Gary Nicholson to coolly lob keeper Barnes and ease the tension. Minutes later Nicholson returned the favour and released Scott who shot across goal and Brydon was on hand to tap in from close range for his second and Preston’s third.

Nicholson drove home from the angle on 86 minutes after Brydon’s shot hit the bar and bounced nicely to Gary to volley home. The fifth arrived moments later as David Scott poked home after a fumble from Barnes.

The late flurry of goals came as Threave appeared to tire and the visitors now have an anxious wait to find out if St Cuthbert’s Wanderers have done enough to gain an SFA Licence and promotion from the South League.
