Match Report – Selkirk v Preston Athletic

Selkirk 0 – 3 Preston Athletic
Ferrari Packaging Lowland League

Preston secured their first opening day victory in the Lowland League with a commanding 2nd half display at Yarrow Park. The home side started brightly and Phil Addison’s early cut back found Jake Moyes whose effort was blocked. From the resultant corner Ricky Miller’s header was cleared off the line. Preston’s David Porcher (part of the Team GB squad heading to Rio) limped off early after a high challenge from James Harley. Selkirk’s Murray Christie then hit a volley from the edge of the box just over. On the half hour Preston’s Michael Park forced keeper Daniel Terry to push over the bar from a long range effort, Greg Douglas then went close with a header.
Selkirk were causing Preston problems with their set pieces and Andrew Fleming connected with a volley that skimmed the bar. Preston started to settle as the second period went on and Reece Cochrane’s long ball was gathered by Neil Shave whose back post cross was just missed by Frazer Henderson. Neil Shave then broke clear of 3 defenders but was the crudely pulled back by Ross King as he headed towards goal. Preston broke the deadlock on 70 minutes as Shave broke into the box and was knocked off balance by keeper Terry as he rounded him and Shave converted the resultant penalty high into the net. Selkirk almost equalised straight away as Jay Doyle forced Preston keeper Bruce Callan into a fine save from a free kick. With 5 minutes remaining Sub Kenny Erskine doubled the lead collecting a Ross Colquhoun pass rounding Terry and netting from a tight angle. In the final minute Miller flattened Gavin Stevenson in the area and Colquhoun slotted the penalty home low into the net.
The Panners securing an opening day three points with a good solid performance and confidence will now be high for next week’s visit of BSC Glasgow
