Title favourites East Kilbride over powered Preston Athletic as they continued their perfect start to the season, although the home side did compete well during the match as Kilby scored 3 outstanding goals amongst the five.
The first chance of the game fell to East Kilbride as Joao Victoria turned well to fire in a shot that was well saved by Bruce Callan, moments later Preston thought they had taken a shock lead as Greg Douglas had the ball in the net but was flagged for a very tight offside.
East Kilbride were awarded a penalty on 20 minutes as Ross Cowan tried to nick the ball from Adam Stachan but the winger took a tumble in the area and the referee Scott Millar had no hesitation. Joao Victoria took the kick but Callan pulled off a tremendous save low to his right, Referee Millar spotted some encroachment in the area and Victoria made no mistake from the re-take.
Kilby were now hunting the ball down quickly and giving Preston no time on the ball but Bruce Callan was playing well and made 2 good saves to keep the hosts in the game. Right on the half time whistle Callan could do nothing to stop a curling effort from Ross McNeil finding the top corner of the net and this appeared to knock the home side as they trudged off.
Gavin Stevenson played in Kenny Park but the strikers header went just over. Then Callan pulled off another tremendous point blank save from sub Gavin Millar. Kilby killed the game on the hour as the Preston defence failed to mark McNeil at a corner and the striker ‘s free header found the net for his second of the game. Soon after Strachan cut in from the left and curled another lovely effort again into the top corner of the net which no keeper would have saved. The 5th goal from Martin McBride was another well worked effort as a cut back from Stachan fell to McBride on the edge of the area to volley home. Douglas and Park both had efforts for Preston in the closing stages.
Preston now travel to league newcomers Hawick Royal Albert.
