Preston Athletic 4-3 University of Stirling
Scottish Lowland Football League
An exciting lowland league match at Pennypit Park which, for the second week in a row for the Panners, was literally a game of two halves.
University of Stirling got the perfect start within 17 minutes after a rifling shot ricocheted off the post which the home defence failed to deal with resulting in Paul McAfferty pouncing on the rebound to slot home. Preston responded with a couple of attacks notably Scott Barclay’s driving run from midfield splitting the Stirling defence but the resulting strike went wide of the Stirling keeper’s left hand post. The remainder of the first half went Stirling’s way in terms of pressure but just before half time Neil Shave forced the Stirling keeper into a fine save from distance.
The second half started pretty much as the first had ended with Stirling continuing to pressurise the Preston defence. Two fine goals in the 47th and 52nd minute by Chris Geddes and Harvey Moyes appeared to have sealed the 3 points for the visitors.
However, substitutions for Preston resulted in renewed enthusiasm and energy and the team started to get back into the match. On 78 minutes good link up play with Ross Cowan and Gavin Stevenson played in Kenny Park who volleyed towards goal forcing the Stirling keeper into another good stop but Park made no mistake with the rebound. Preston continued to press and on 83 minutes a corner was cleared by the Stirling defence to 20yards out and Ross Cowan smashed home a wonderful volley into the top corner. Pennycuick pulled off a couple of fantastic saves at the other end as Stirling continued to advance. Full time was approaching when a good interchange between Kenny Park and Frazer Henderson caused a stromash in the box and Danny O’Rourke lashed the ball home from 12 yards. Relief for the Preston supporters at the turnaround and a well retrieved point (or so they thought!).
However, the Preston lads weren’t quite finished! Two minutes into stoppage time a beautiful through ball from Kenny Park released Stuart Ritchie who finished with a fine low strike into the bottom corner for Preston’s 4th goal to complete the unbelievable comeback for the Panners and a very much welcomed 3 points.
