Preston Athletic 0 – 3 Edinburgh University AFC
Ferrari Packaging Lowland League
A 10 minute first half hat-trick from the students Bruce Scott lit up a very cold and blustery fireworks day at the Pennypit to condemn Preston to another league defeat.
The home side created the first clear chance as Stuart Ritchie fed Fabio Neto sending the striker clean through, his shot clipping the outside of the post. On 35 minutes the deadlock was broken as Scott did well to hook a close range effort into the net from a few yards out as the Preston defence failed to clear a bouncing ball, he doubled the lead after latching onto a rebound off the bar to thump a half volley home. The only blot on his day was a booking for an outrageous dive trying to win a penalty after keeper Bruce Callan did well to close the striker down as he bore down on goal. Scott then completed his hat-trick with a superb curling 25 yard effort into the top corner of the goal.
Preston created another fine chance as great work by Neto and Keith Murray set up Sean Lawson but somehow scooped the ball over from close range. The half finished with a fine cross from Liam Matthew and Scott McCrory-Irving glanced a header only just wide.
The 2nd period saw Preston endeavour to cut the deficit as they had the strong wind at their backs, the impressive Keith Murray reached the byline and cut back for the on-rushing Neto and Henderson, it looked like one of them would score but somehow Max Verkaik managed to clear the danger for a corner. David McLeod and Ritchie both had chances from corners but the Panners could not break down the Uni defence. In truth Preston created the clearest chances and there was not much in the tie, with Bruce Scott proving the real difference on the day with his clinical finishing.
