Dalbeattie Star 2 – 3 Preston Athletic
Ferrari Packaging Lowland League
Islecroft remains a very happy hunting ground for the Panners as Fabio Neto’s late header sealed the much needed points for the visitors, The striker rose well on 85 minutes to glance a neat header from a Frazer Henderson free kick into the net.
The game started with great closing down play on 7 minutes by Neto, Henderson and Kenny Erskine that forced a defensive mistake, the latter fed Neto totally unmarked in the centre of the area to slot Preston into an early lead. Danny Dunglinson bundled an equaliser soon after as a deep corner was headed back across goal and Dunglinson beat two other Star men to net. The visitors continued to push forward and Neto, Gavin Stevenson and Robbie Carter all had efforts on goal, it was then no surprise when the Preston lead was restored on 36 mins as Reece Cochrane released Stevenson down the left wing, his cross found Henderson who beat a defender and rifled home. Dalbeattie defender Richard Maxwell was shown a straight red soon after for comments to the assistant.Tommy Muir was perhaps fortunate to also remain on the park as he left studs in on a challenge with Stevenson, only receiving a Yellow. Muir then nearly equalised with a diving header that went just wide. Preston’s Robbie Carter was causing Liam Park problems and was unlucky not to win a penalty as Park caught him as he drove into the box.
The 10 men forced a way back into the game just after the hour as a double substitution paid off immediately with Lewis Sloan’s fine finish after a slack Craig Pennycuick punch fell right to the striker who steadied himself and drove home.
Stevenson then found himself on the end of a neat passing move but his shot hit the side netting, Jack Jardine then forced a save from Vincent Parker before Neto’s late winner, Carter again with a driving run and winning the decisive free kick on the edge of the area.
With over 5 minutes of added time played the Panners held firm marshalled well at the back by Captain David McLeod and Ross Cowan. With two straight wins in December confidence should be high going into the important New Years Eve clash with Civil Service Strollers at the Pennypit.
