Match Report – Vale of Leithen v Preston Athletic

Ferrari Packaging Lowland League
The fixture was all but over inside 6 minutes as Vale striker Jason Stevens’ quickfire double put the home side in command. His first on 4 minutes saw the striker rifle home from close range into the roof of the net from a Sean Stewart cut back, and then within a few minutes collected another cut back this time from Blair Atkinson on the left to rifle home from near the penalty spot. To their credit the Panners did re-group and passed the ball about well, on 25 minutes Jason Young found himself unmarked at the back post after a 5 man move, but Vale keeper Jamie McQueen saved well, more good play from Gavin Stevenson found Young again but his effort was well blocked.
Atkinson cut through the Preston defence on 40 minutes but Bruce Callan did well to deny the winger.
On the hour Atkinson raced clear after more slack play in Preston’s midfield and his shot hit both posts before finding the net. There was late drama as Craig McBride pushed Stuart Ritchie over in the box for no apparent reason and Gavin Stevenson slotted home for the visitors. ¬†Fabio Neto nearly pulled the visitors right back in the game but his well struck effort was pushed round the post by McQueen. Atkinson then won a penalty after being fouled by Callan but the keeper made amends with a terrific save. The defeat leaves the Panners adrift at the bottom of the table.
