The Panners were left to wonder how this match got away from them after going into the interval deservedly in the lead and then hitting the woodwork 4 times in the second period whilst containing the visitors to very few clear cut chances, Preston’s goal was a route one move from Craig Pennycuick’s long goal kick was flicked on by Fabio Neto to Mark Smith who fed Jason Young to compose himself and rifle past Michael Ballantyne in Gretna’s goal. Preston dominated the early play and Robbie Carter was at the heart of everything, as early as 7 minutes a driving run got the winger free in the box but his effort was weak. Gavin Stevenson then tried his luck from 30 yards. The goal came on 12 minutes and soon after Carter and Mark Smith combined well but the latter’s shot deflected just wide. Stevenson’s header from the resultant corner went just over. The away side’s best chance was a free header close in by Jordan Little from a corner that went inches pat the post.
The heavy park made keeping the ball on the deck difficult but Gretna did that to equalise right from the resumption, Ellis Pearson stroking home from a yard out after a neat move, the away side then stunned the Panners as they struck again moments later as a long clearance found Pearson who released Scott Norman to lob Pennycuick. The home side was stunned at the quick turnaround in the match.
Preston continued to push forward and On 68 minutes Stevenson’s shot hit the post and seconds later sub Greg Binnie latched onto Danny O’Rourke’s through ball and fired in a shot which Ballantyne did well to get a hand to and push onto the bar. Gretna’s Jamie Hope was shown a second yellow card for bringing down Carter as he drove in on goal with 10 minutes left Preston’s Chris Inglis then hit a drive from distance that sailed just over and in the closing moments Stevenson hit the bar again with a towering header and Binnie’s follow up was cleared of the line and against the post in a scramble.
