A a goal in each half from Colts striker Sean Brown condemned Preston to East of Scotland football next season as the home side had no answer to the Colts impressive forward trio who ran the Panners defence ragged all night.

A bumper Friday night crowd of 263 at the Pennypit including a large Groundhop contingent, returning after last season’s disappointing match cancellation, saw Brown open the scoring on 25 minutes as he sliced through the home defence to slot past Craig Pennycuick. But for a poor final ball and some good goalkeeping by Pennycuick the away side could easily have been more comfortable at half time, indeed when they did get the ball in the net again the assistant’s flag helped Preston as Craig Murray was yards offside as he stroked home. The most controversial incident of the match happened just before half time as Brown launched himself into Pennycuick as the keeper came out well to deny the forward, who was perhaps very lucky just to be spoken to.

Just after half time Preston’s Ross Cowan was not so fortunate as he was shown a straight red for a last man challenge on Stephen O’Neill who outpaced the Preston defence and appeared to be caught just outside the area. Frustration appeared to get the better of the 10 men as the side lost their discipline for a period and a further flurry of bookings maybe added to the drama for the large crowd but took the focus away from the attempts to get the goals needed to get back into the game. Colts O’Neill, Murray and Jonathan Black all saw shots cleared off the line within seconds of each other and then Robbie Carter created the home side’s best chance of the night making the space for himself and fired just over. Brown however, finished off a neat move down the right on 82 minutes to add to the Panners misery. O’Neill could have compounded this late on as he put a header just wide when he should have scored.
