Edinburgh University 4 – 0 Preston Athletic
Ferrari Packaging Lowland League
The Students won convincingly but the relegated Preston side made them work hard for the victory before running out of steam later in the 2nd half.
The visitors started the brighter and pushed their hosts back, after good work by Jay Cochrane and Chris Inglis found Jason Young whose shot went just over. The best move of the half saw Inglis feed Young who forced a good stop from keeper Mark Tait making his 302 appearance for the Students. Uni then took the lead on the half hour against the run of play as a long hopeful ball upfield saw David Maskrey beat the offside trap and square for Bertie Collins to tuck home in the bottom corner.
Preston again started brightly Lewis Turkington had a shot from distance that deceived Tait but just clipped the top of the bar. Jack Guthrie then forced a good stop from Craig Pennycuick in the Preston goal.
Turkington had another shot from the edge of the box after good link up play by Inglis and Young but again Tait held firm.
Uni doubled their lead after a misunderstanding between Reece Cochrane and Pennycuick allowed Guthrie to poke home from close in.
A quick free kick caught out the Preston defence as they tried to organise their wall, Mark Law pulling down Guthrie and Sub Bruce Scott sent Pennycuick the wrong way with the resultant penalty, Scott completed his quick fire double late on thumping a deep cross into the net to put a gloss on the scoreline.
