Match Report – Hawick Royal Albert v Preston Athletic

Hawick Royal Albert 2 v 4 Preston Athletic
Scottish Lowland Football League Cup R1
Following confirmation of relegation to the East of Scotland League next season, Preston travelled south looking to get a confidence boosting League Cup win against  Hawick Royal Albert.
There was a huge sigh of relief for the Panners’ when Hawick’s Josh Morris headed into the Preston goal after just 90 seconds but it was ruled offside by the nearside assistant referee.  Preston rallied quickly when a corner fired in by Jay Cochrane was headed home unchallenged by striker Jack Jardine.  An inspired Preston team continued to pressurise the Hawick defence and a long kick out from goalkeeper Craig Pennycuick was flicked on by Jardine into the path of Jason Young whose strike beat the diving Hawick goalkeeper.  The Preston midfield and forwards were causing problems for the Hawick defence and the third goal on the half hour resulted from a handling mistake by the Hawick goalkeeper which was knocked back across the goal by Jardine and pounced on again by Young netting his second of the afternoon.
After the break, Hawick came out strongly and on 49 minutes Josh Morris got on the end of a great cross into the box to pull one back for the home side.  Shortly after, Preston were awarded a free kick about 30 yards out after a challenge on Conway who then proceeded to deliver a fantastic cross straight onto the head of Stevenson who netted from 6 yards leaving the Hawick keeper with no chance.  The final goal of the afternoon came when a 50yard diagonal cross caught out the Preston defence and was headed home by McKenzie.
Hard work and commitment by the Preston lads paid off and saw them rewarded with a quarter final match next week at Civil Service Strollers.
