Match Report – Civil Service Strollers v Preston Athletic

Civil Service Strollers 6 – 2 Preston Athletic
Lowland League Cup Round 2
Strollers reached the League Cup semi final stage with a dominant performance against a lacklustre Preston side, a 3 goal burst in a 10 minute first half spell put this tie well beyond the Panners reach. Preston started quickly and Jack Jardine hit the side netting early after good set up play by Jason Young, Jardine then controlled a long high ball, turned well but shot over. Jack Downie and Jordon Boyle both went close for the hosts but on the half hour an in-swinging corner saw Craig Newall tap in unchallenged from close range, then striker Stephen Froude’s cut back found Ian Ballantyne unmarked at the back post to double the advantage. Andrew Mair dispatched a free kick from 20 yards under the body of the diving Craig Pennycuick into the net.
Moments into the 2nd period Mair broke through the Preston defence but was denied by Pennycuick, Froude then latched onto a defensive mistake to make it 4, soon after he was denied another by a great stop from Pennycuick. Preston’s Gavin Stevenson had a hat-trick of chances within a few minutes that all went close before Sub David Churchill headed the 5th on the break. Greg Binnie pulled one back for the visitors then Jason Young added a 2nd soon after as the Strollers took their foot off the pedal. Jonathan Watson however completed the scoring late on for the Strollers. The Panners now have to start rebuilding for their season in the East of Scotland League.
