SFA South Region Cup Round 2
On a difficult surface at Meadowbank 3G surface, Preston travelled to face Leith for the second time in 2 months on the 3g surface. The last time the sides met Leith ran out 2-0 winners in the opening league match but this was a cup tie and a chance to advance in a trophy won by East Kilbride last year.
The home side started the better and had most of the good chances in the first half. Ryan Currie and Liam Ritchie both came close to scoring for Leith. The visitors had chances also as Fabio Neto, Gavin Stevenson and Marc Reid (who came on for the injured Dale Pennycuick) all came close but it was a stalemate at the break.
The second half was dominated by the visitors but Alexander Dimitrov & Fabio Neto couldn’t find the net for Preston. However, it took until the last 10 minutes of the match for the game to get goals.
Leith scored the opener when Ryan Currie finished off a pass from substitute Stefan Hay. But Preston were able to take the match to extra time when a long throw by Michael McFarlane was flicked into the net by Steven Campbell on 88 minutes.
Into extra time we went and it ended up being Leith who scored 2 goals against 10 man Preston (Gavin Stevenson having been shown a red card in the 89th minute for a second bookable offence) in the extra 30 minutes through Ryan Currie at the start of the first period and Gavin Reid who scored 2 minutes from the end.
