Match Report – Tweedmouth Rangers v Preston Athletic

Tweedmouth Rangers 1 – 4 Preston Athletic
Central Taxis East of Scotland League
The strong swirling wind and soft underfoot conditions meant that both sides struggled to play any football at Old Shielfield in the opening 30 minutes, however the match was to be livened up by a tremendous goal for the hosts as the ball broke loose in the middle of the park and Tweedmouth’s midfielder (number 16) appeared to attempt to put a ball into the box from fully 40 yards out but struck it so sweetly and wind assisted deceived Preston keeper Pennycuick and the ball sailed into the top left hand corner of the goal, a superb opener that delighted the home support. This in trust was Pennycuicks only involvement in the game as the Preston keeper had very little to do all game as the home side fought hard but rarely ventured forward after the goal. Preston eventually came round to the task and Jack Jardine was inches away from touching in a Greg Binnie corss at the back post, the the equaliser came as a deep Johnny Grotlin cross from the left found Gavin Stevenson whose effort was well saved but dropped nicely to Steven Campbell at the edge of the box to lash an effort home.
Preston came out with renewed purpose in the second period and Marc Reid’s effort was tipped over the bar. On the hour Preston’s management team subbed Jardine for winger Alex Dimitrov and it paid off almost immediately as Dimitrov latched onto a loose ball in the box after the ball had bobbled around to drive home from 10 yards out to put the Panners ahead. Dimitrov then sent over a cross for Stevenson whose effort came off the post.
Preston were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and Dimitrov drove his shot low and hard into the corner of the net to give the visitors some breathing space. Then in the dying moments Craig Innes was fouled in the area as he had broke forward and Dimitrov completed his 20 minute hat-trick by driving the ball straight down the centre of the goal.
A match winning performance from Dimitrov as Preston survived the difficult conditions to claim the three points.
